How to Read the Results?
The peripheral smear report describes the appearance and characteristics of blood cells. Interpretation should always be done by a qualified doctor.
Red Blood Cells (RBCs)
Doctors assess the size, shape, and color of RBCs.
| Morphology | What it Means |
| Small or pale cells | May indicate iron deficiency anemia |
| Large cells | May suggest vitamin deficiency |
| Irregular shapes | May indicate specific blood disorders |
White Blood Cells (WBCs)
The number and type of WBCs help detect:
- Infections (bacterial, viral, parasitic)
- Inflammation
- Blood cancers (like leukemia)
Platelets
Platelets are responsible for blood clotting.
| Platelet Count | What it Means |
| Low platelet count | Risk of bleeding (seen in dengue, infections) |
| High platelet count | May indicate inflammation or other conditions |
Presence of Abnormal Cells or Parasites
- Malaria parasites may be visible
- Abnormal or immature cells may suggest serious conditions
As per All India Institute of Medical Sciences and National Health Portal, smear findings are interpreted along with clinical symptoms and other lab tests.
